Over the last year or two, my buddy, Shane, had talked to me many times about wanting to come shoot some fly fishing with me. Shane doesn’t fly fish but he spends a lot of time outside doing outside stuff and, like many, is intrigued by fly fishing. Finally, this summer we made it happen and he joined me for a day of chasing Bonnies! To me, it was a day that epitomized summer fly fishing: wet wading in my Chacos, fish looking up, and not a care in the world. It reminded me a lot of the days I had fishing while growing up. I fished solo 99% of the time until my mid-20’s. During high school, my summers were spent getting lost in less-traveled parts of Utah throwing dries to eager fish. It was fun sharing the many experiences and emotions in a day’s fishing with a friend and his lens. All in all, it was a great day out on the water and I think things really came together for just a day fishing and filming. I think there will be more collaborations down the road. The edit is way longer than I originally expected it would be but I liked the way the clips were flowing with the tunes so hopefully it holds your attention! Bonneville cutthroat are a special fish and we got into some beautiful specimen so that should help!

    Loved that video! Looks like you’re running a dry-dropper rig in the film? I’ve never used a dry-dropper, so just curious what your setup looks like? Distance from dry to nymph? Split shots? etc…

      Stoked you enjoyed it! Yeah, dry-dropper is a killer setup for summertime fishing. Even two dries. I usually just use a beadhead nymph. Depending on the size of the stream/river I’m usually going 12-24 inches below the dry. Don’t wait for your dry to dunk either…watch for flashes and other signs of subsurface eats!

    DUDE! that video was awesome. I live in Pennsylvania and my only western fly fishing experience so far was a small spring creek in south central Colorado. Small stream near where a friend owned a farm. He showed me how to get to it and I spent an August day very similar to your video (minus the badass cutthroat) by myself, bare bones, wet wading and catching little savage brownies.
    Love your style, nothing fancy or showy, just obvious pure love and skill of the sport.
    Great video man, pulling me out of the winter blues and ready for the excitement of spring.
    Keep doing what you’re doing, it’s great!
